Flannel Friday: All Kinds of Weather

You must have heard, Brits like to talk about the weather, right? So here are some flannel pieces to facilitate that conversation with the wee ones!

Well, I thought I'd develop the idea of my snowflakes with templates a little further. Now I have a number of flannel pieces showing different sorts of weather to talk to my storytime kids about. They can choose which one they think today's weather is most like.

Here is last week's sunny sun! And also daytime, as opposed to ...

Sun or Daytime

... night time!

Moon and Stars or Night-time

This one might see a lot of use ...

Cloudy

... hopefully this one not so much! (Although being realistic, it might wear out from over-use pretty quickly)

Raining

Now, this is still a work in progress, looks a bit like an egg, but really it's overcast.

Overcast

Then we finish with a little snow (unfinished).

Snowing

I'd welcome ideas for other weather symbols, I'm thinking ... lightening, fog?
Please post your ideas as comments, I'm a little brain dead this week.

Now, I promised more templates this year.  They'll be in my next FF post. Why not subscribe to the blog so you don't miss them? The buttons to subscribe by email or RSS are up on the right, just below the Flannel Friday logo.

The Flannel Friday Roundup this week is hosted by Anne at SoTomorrow and links to past and future roundups can also be found at Anne's blog at SoTomorrow. Images of Flannel Friday posts are displayed on Flannel Friday Pinterest.

Oh! Have a nice day (weather-wise)!

  1. I love this idea! We did something similar when I was in Kindergarten, only instead of felt, we used a weather wheel.

And I have to say that I love the little rain cloud! The black paint was a nice addition to it!

    1. Thanks, the rain cloud was my favourite to make, but a bit messy as I just smeared a line of puffy paint with my finger!

  2. The rain cloud is stunning. I can't wait to get your patterns as these turned out great.

    1. Thanks, I'll have to get to work on those patterns, as quite a bit was freehand. May be in 2 weeks time though, not sure if I'll be done for next week.

  3. This would be a fun way to start off a storytime. I might be one of the few where I live wishing the "snowing" circle would be coming out more often.

    1. In one way I'm longing for snow, so that I can use the fun snow themed storytime Ive prepared. Otherwise it'll have to wait for next year.

  4. I have been toying with the idea of starting a "What is the weather today?" portion of storytime and I think that doing a flannelboard might just be the way to go!

    1. You should! I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

  5. Those are beautiful, especially the rain cloud with the shading. Though the sunny one would be the one we use the most, I think the kids would enjoy all of them. A stormy one would be nice, and you could make an all gray one for fog. You could also do temperature, like cold or hot, too.

    1. Also! In the U.S. we could do a tornado one. Those are fairly common for some of us.

    2. Thanks for all the ideas Mollie. Yes, we had fog 2 days ago and it made me wonder if some gauze fabric over a picture would work. I wouldn't have much use for a tornado though!

  6. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. I think this post might have a part 2.

  7. Such itty-bitty scissor work! How big are these. Lightning would be good as would a big old storm cloud. Ka-boom!

    1. The circles are just over 6" across (and the snowflakes are fabric stickers) , so maybe not such itty-bitty scissor work? Mmm, will definitely do lightening and storm cloud (hopefully that we never be the weather of the day though).

  8. Nicely done. I especially like your rain cloud. And I say those stars are still pretty itty-bitty! How about adding a blowing cloud for windy days?

    1. Ah, I cheated on the stars a bit and used a paper punch. It wasn't entirely successful though, as it only cut about 3/4 of the star and then the flannel vanished inside the punch. Once I'd flattened the tiny flannel balls, they became stars with just a bit of trimming. Now WINDY is a good idea, just wasn't sure how I'd execute it.

  9. Absolutely gorgeous! You do such beautiful work, LQ! When I grow-up, I want to be just like you! ;-) LOL!

Here is a simple little song that I used with 2 and 3 year olds when I taught preschool. We sang it everyday before we chose a weather picture for our calendar during our circle time. (I have another more lengthy song for older kids.)

What's the Weather (sung to: Frere Jacques)

    What's the weather?
    What's the weather?
    Can you tell?
    Can you tell?
    Is the sun shining?
    Is the rain falling?
    Can you tell?
    Can you tell?

You can change the words as needed. :-)

  10. Thanks K! Your rhyme is PERFECT! I'll be using it ever time I use this set from now on.

  11. I love all the details and work you put into these flannel pieces! What an inspiration. I keep making flannel pieces in the hopes mine will eventually look as good as yours.

    1. Thanks for you kind words Paula, but I'm still learning too. I attempt to try a different technique with each post (but it doesn't always work out that way).
