Flannel Friday: It's all in the lamination

When I'm in a hurry, my best friends are clip art, velco dots and the laminator!

I found myself in need of a fast storytime this week, and just about all the books I wanted to read aloud were out on loan.

I plumped for an easy dogs theme, but my group had seen Dog's Colourful Day once too often!

The rhyme I used was shamelessly borrowed from Librarian Lisa's Storytimes,  Storytime Katie as well as Fun Baby Games Online, and a few more.

As ever, I changed the wording a little, to match my phrasing ability (just not sure why it's not quite the same as everyone else's).

Five Little Puppies
Five little puppies were playing in the sun.
One saw a rabbit, and he began to run.
One saw a butterfly, and he began to race.
One saw a cat, and he began to chase.
One tried to catch his tail,
So he went round and round.
And one was so quiet ...
... that he never made a sound!

I love the versatility of the laminator and it's ability to become (virtually) invisible. I used this characteristic to make pairs to match the rhyme to make it super easy to put on the flannel board. I used simple black icons for the 'minor' characters.

These all came from Open Clip Art which is open source (ever cautious about copyright violation).

  1. Very cute!

I love the laminator, too! But I mostly make magnetic board things with it...

However, I am getting a little more used to the flannel board idea. Thanks to Flannel Friday!

  2. Clip art and a laminator is my favorite way to make a "flannel" story. I made a real flannel this week, and it took...so...long. I did get to use glitter glue, though ;)

Thanks for recommending Open Clip Art! On the homepage right now, there are the cutest farm animals that I must download. You can always use animals, right?

  3. I never thought of using the silhouette of the animal. Great idea. No laminator at my library...but I do pick up the self laminating pages sometimes. Thanks for the tips!

    1. My colleague and I bought the laminator ourselves 'cause it's so useful. Very low cost model, but the quality is fine for what we do.

    2. LQ, what kind is it? Was it very expensive?

Jane, sometimes I use clear contact paper. It is cheaper than the self-laminating pages...

    3. K, it was a supermarket own brand (Tesco), about $20. Library service pays for laminating sheets.
